Privacy Policy
Effective date: September 26, 2026 · Applies to the Comma mobile app and related online services
This policy explains how Comma ("we") handles your information when you use the Comma app and its companion online service. The principle is short: your recordings and transcripts stay on your device by default; our servers process only the minimum needed to run the service.
Information we process
Account and installation
- Installation ID: a random identifier generated on first launch, used to identify this installation and grant initial free quota.
- Account: you can stay anonymous; if you sign in with Apple or Google we receive the account identifier from that platform, and with your consent possibly your name and email.
- Device and runtime: platform (iOS/Android), device model, OS version, app version, locale, time zone, and request IP address (for security and troubleshooting).
Audio and text
- Audio: in online mode, audio is sent to our self-hosted recognition service when you tap Finish and is processed in memory. Audio is not stored long-term; it is released from server memory after processing.
- Transcripts: transcription text is not written to our database. The server keeps the most recent result in memory briefly for idempotent retries, then releases it.
- On-device content: recordings, transcripts, translations and history live on your device and can be deleted in the app at any time. Deleting the app removes them.
- Offline mode: with on-device recognition, audio never leaves your phone.
Usage and diagnostics
- Quota and usage: seconds consumed per recognition, status, latency and error codes, used for billing and quality.
- Purchases: order information (product, amount, status) during the simulated-purchase phase.
How we use information
- To provide recognition, quota, sign-in and purchase features;
- To keep the service secure (abuse prevention, troubleshooting) and measure quality;
- To reply when you contact support.
We do not sell personal information and do not use it for cross-app advertising. The app contains no third-party ad SDKs.
Sharing
- Sign-in providers: Apple and Google, only when you choose to sign in, only to verify identity.
- Cloud and recognition: the service runs on our own cloud hosts; online recognition is provided by our own configured speech-recognition service.
- Legal: only when required by law or valid legal process.
Retention and deletion
- Server-side: account, installation, quota and usage records are retained while the account exists.
- Audio and transcripts: not retained long-term, as described above.
- Deletion: use "Settings → About → Delete Account" in the app. Server-side account and credentials are removed immediately; on-device history is yours to manage in the app. You can also follow the account deletion page to contact us.
Children
Comma is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes
We may update this policy as the service or legal requirements change; the effective date on this page will be updated. Material changes will be highlighted in the app or on this page.
